Yesterday was quite a significant day for me. For the last year and a half, I have been enrolled in an online medical transcription course and just yesterday, I submitted the final exam.Since enrolling I like to think that I have learned quite a lot.
For example: I have learned TONS of medical terms such as fast spin-echo and femoropopliteal. I can now decipher prescription orders, such as p.o. means "by mouth" and b.i.d. means "twice a day," which I think is pretty fun. I can tell you how to properly punctuate a sentence too. (I thought I already knew how, but learned quite a bit more). I have learned the different kinds of medications like beta blockers, and analgesics, and even the different ways they are taken, like enteral or parenteral. I have studied the human body, its diseases, and how to properly format a medical report. Along the way, my typing speed has improved, and my listening ear has gained great strides. This is just the tip of what information the course has gone over, and what is demanded of a medical transcriptionist.
In about 2 weeks I will get back my test results and see how it all turned out. I don't know if I did enough to pass it or not. All I know is that I did the very best that I could. Until then, I am going to sit back and relax and enjoy knowing that I finished the course when it felt like I would never get here.
